For mothers, a breast pump can be an essential tool. But buying one can be expensive, especially if you opt for a high-quality electric breast pump. Fortunately, some Dutch health insurers offer a solution in the form of (partial) reimbursement. How does this work exactly?
Reimbursement through basic insurance
The basic insurance does not cover breast pumps or lactation consultations. This means that you will have to pay the costs yourself, unless you have additional insurance.
Supplementary insurance: an option
With additional insurance you can get a reimbursement in some cases. This can be:
- Buying a breast pump.
- Rental costs of a breast pump (for example for short-term use).
- A lactation consultation , during which tips about pumping are often also given.
The amount of the reimbursement varies per insurer and policy. Some packages reimburse a fixed amount (for example €75 or €80), while others cover a percentage of the costs.
What are the conditions?
To qualify for compensation, specific conditions often apply, such as:
- Certified Provider : You must purchase or rent the breast pump through a certified provider or lactation consultant.
- Affiliated with NVL : Many insurers require that the lactation consultant is affiliated with the Dutch Association of Lactation Consultants (NVL).
- Submit invoice : Always request a specified invoice. This is necessary to submit your claim to the insurer.
Tip: Compare health insurance policies
Are you considering a supplementary insurance? Then this is the time to compare health insurances, because you can switch every year. Websites such as Independer and Zorgwijzer can help you choose the best package for your situation.
