How to prepare for your delivery: Checklist for expectant parents

Door Door Sheppr

The period before the birth of your baby is an exciting time, full of preparations and plans. For many expectant parents, it is quite a challenge to get everything in order in time, especially if it is your first child. But don't worry, with a little organization and the right planning you can go a long way. In this blog we will help you on your way with a checklist, so that you can be sure that you have everything arranged for the big day.

 Arrange your maternity care

One of the most important things to arrange in time is your maternity care. In the Netherlands, you are entitled to maternity care, which means that a healthcare professional will help you during the first days after giving birth. It is best to arrange this between week 12 and 16 of your pregnancy, because maternity care agencies can fill up quickly. It is useful to know what your health insurance will reimburse and whether there is a personal contribution. This way you can arrange it without any surprises afterwards.

Make a birth plan

A birth plan is not mandatory, but it can help to make your delivery as relaxed as possible. In this document, you write down your wishes regarding the delivery. Do you want pain relief or not? Who do you want with you during the delivery? How do you envision the care of your baby immediately after the birth? Discuss your plans with your midwife, so that you can make clear what your expectations are. This makes it easier for you and your care providers to guide your delivery in the way that you find most pleasant.

Pack a hospital bag (or home birth bag)

From week 37 of your pregnancy, it is time to pack your hospital bag or home birth bag. Even if you are planning a home birth, it is always useful to have a bag ready in case things don't go as planned. Make sure you have the following items at hand: your ID card, insurance card, birth plan, comfortable clothing, slippers, and of course baby items such as clothes in size 50/56 and a hat. Don't forget diapers, baby wipes, toiletries, and a phone charger.

Is the baby shower ready?

Your baby shower is one of the most important things to prepare for the arrival of your little one. Check that you have everything you need for the first few weeks. Think of a safe crib or cot with a firm mattress, baby clothes such as rompers, suits and socks, and care products such as nappy cream and bath oil. Don't forget a car seat for the first trip home. If you want to know what other items are useful to have, you can consult our Baby Shower List .

Discuss your leave and childcare

Especially if you have a job, it is important to think about your leave in good time. In the Netherlands, you can take maternity and maternity leave, so discuss this with your employer in good time and apply for leave via the UWV. In addition, it is wise to think about childcare in advance for when you return to work. Keep in mind that popular childcare locations often have long waiting times, so start this well in advance.

Take care of your finances

Children bring extra costs, but fortunately there are also allowances that you can apply for. It is good to know whether you are entitled to child benefit, which is automatically applied for after the birth registration, and whether you may be eligible for childcare allowance if you use childcare.

Report the birth on time

After birth, you must register your baby within three days at the municipality where he or she was born. This can often be done online or at the town hall. You will then receive a birth certificate, which you will need to apply for child benefit and other administrative matters.

Prepare for the birth itself

Taking a pregnancy class can help you prepare for childbirth. During such a class, you will learn breathing techniques, which positions can be helpful, and how to support your partner. And remember: although you may have certain expectations about how childbirth will go, it is important to be flexible. Trust your body, your care providers, and your own strength. Childbirth will not always be exactly as you imagine it, but that does not make it any less special.
